About Tickmore
Tickmore is a traditional smallholding situated on Brimfield
Common. The towns of Ludlow, Leominster and Tenbury are each
approximately 5 miles away from us, which puts us on the borders
of Shropshire, Herefordsire and Worcestershire. As soon as one
leaves the A49, the calm of the Common descends and, provided one
doesn’t hesitate too long after passing through the gate to
enjoy the views across the Common, Tickmore is reached within 5
minutes.
The 400-year-old house is a traditional “2 up 2 down”
half-timbered and rendered construction, whose adjacent barns have
been converted to give room for a spacious farmhouse-style
kitchen. As in most homes, this is the heart of the house;
breakfast is cooked and served here and guests are welcome. |
Bed and
Breakfast Near Ludlow
Our bed and breakfast accommodation is comfortable, but very
informal. Both the twin room and the double room have their own
shower room and tea and coffee making facilities. Ludlow is justly
famous for its food so we normally expect that guests will explore
those possibilities for meals other than breakfast. We are pleased
to use the delicious local bacon and sausages to go with the eggs
from our own hens for breakfast. (Vegetarian breakfast can
certainly be provided!) The breakfast “cabaret” is provided by the
many birds that visit our feeding site in the yard. |

The Ryleand Sheep
Ryelands are among the oldest UK breeds of sheep, having been
developed locally, in fact they were so productive of valuable
wool that they were known as “Leominster ore”. Our pedigree
Ryeland and Coloured Ryeland sheep keep the grass short, though
they are not allowed in the wild-flower meadows until they are cut
for hay at the end of July for their winter feed.
The lambs may be sold for breeding or slaughtered and butchered at
a nearby small abattoir for delicious meat, which we sell as half
lambs or eat in the house. We sometimes sell fleeces to amateur
spinners, though most of it is taken to a mill to be spun into
knitting wool (creamy white and several shades of grey). We
sometimes have knitted goods for sale, too. |

Local Shropshire Attractions
There is a variety of local attractions, though the rolling
English countryside remains the main one. Several National Trust
properties are close as are a number of attractive private gardens
open to the public. Various farms offer activities more or less
associated with farming. Most towns have a museum. Hereford, for
instance, has a cider museum as well as its cathedral. A trip to
Ironbridge is a full day’s entertainment and there are several
ruined castles and forts closer to home. |

Some of our guests enjoy helping
with the “farm” work and as we have 11 acres of fields and
orchards, in which we have Ryeland sheep, chickens and ducks as
well as vegetable and soft fruit gardens, there is always plenty
to do. Guests have cleared brambles from hedges, helped marshall
sheep for shearing and rolled fleeces as they were shorn off, dug
the vegetable patch, helped in all the processes of apple juice
making, carted and stacked hay bales, creosoted the hen houses…or
“slobbed out” in front of the television, next to the fire – it’s
just a matter of how they prefer to relax.
Despite the many activities of Tickmore, there is a calm that
pervades the whole place and peaceful relaxation can be enjoyed. |
